So, you want to buy a rugged PDA?

Now, either your nice and shiny mobile computer, carrying all your important data has just taken a nose dive into a puddle of murky water causing you to look for something more rugged or you are planning ahead and know you will need something that's built like a sherman tank! Either way you have come to the right place.

What do you need to look for when buying a rugged PDA?

Looking for the right rugged PDA for your application can be taxing, with so many models and incarnations of rugged PDAs on the market at the moment it's easy to get frustrated.

So, what should you be looking for? The answers are relatively simple. Look at your particular application and ask yourself relevant questions, for example;

What functionality do you need your rugged PDA to have?
All rugged PDAs have various options including camera, barcode scanner, imager to name a few. Having a camera for example offers the opportunity to record not only information via text but also to capture images to further support the text entry.

Do you need the rugged PDA to be wifi, bluetooth, GPRS and/or GPS?
Most rugged PDAs come with various connectivity options, or combinations of. Having a rugged PDA with wifi (802.11) allows you to connect to your wireless network while working in a warehouse for example. GPRS and GPS connectivety is ideal for field workers, where data can be sent through the GPRS network, location can be tracked through GPS.

Do you record most of your information through the display or by using a keypad on your rugged PDA?
If you use the display on your rugged PDA for data entry, the best option would be to go for a rugged PDA with a smaller keypad, and larger display. If you depend on the keypad alot for data entry then choose a rugged PDA that has a good sized keypad, and well spaced buttons.

What is an IP rating and how can it help me choose the right rugged PDA for me?
When choosing the right rugged PDA the IP rating can be a useful guide to determine just how rugged your PDA of choice is, but what is an IP rating you say? In a nutshell this rating standard describes a system for classifying the degrees of protection provided by the enclosures/cases of electrical equipment against dust and water.

The first number indicates the level of protection against dust, maximum you can have is 6, the second number indicates the level of protection against water, maximum level is 8.

For example the Psion Teklogix Ikon rugged PDA is IP65 rated. Taking the first number, 6 signifies that this rugged PDA is dust tight. The second number, 5 tells you that the rugged PDA is projected against jets of water from any angle.
